World War I bonus files and record of casualties, 1916-1940.

Series 1, 2, and 3 of RG 84-107 consist of World War I veterans bonus files (1921-1932) for veterans from Michigan who served in the Army, Navy and Marines of the American armed forces. 4 x 6 or 5 x 8 (Navy) inch cards for the Army includes the name of the soldier, address, serial number, race, place and date of induction, place and date of birth, rank, training camp, assignments and transfers, engagements, overseas service, discharge date, and disability. The Navy cards includes similar information, as does the Marine cards, which also includes information on wounds or injuries. Series 4 of RG 84-107 includes list of Army, Navy and Marine dead (1917-1919). This record offers much the same information as the above cards but includes information on when died and who was notified. Series 5 of RG 84-107 documents the legislation related to the bonus files and rules soldiers followed when applying.

On June 15, 1921, the Michigan Legislature passed Act 1 which provided "for the payment of a bonus to persons who served in the Army, Navy, or Marine forces of the United States during the late war with Germany and Austria." To qualify, one had to have been a resident of Michigan serving in the military at any time between April 6, 1917 and August 1, 1919.
